# How to create a collection

Collections group products together so customers can browse related items. You can create manual collections (where you choose products individually) or smart collections (where products are added automatically based on rules).

## Step-by-step: Create a Collection

## Open the Collections section

Go to **Shopify Admin → Products → Collections**. Click **Create collection** in the top right corner.

## Add a title and description

Enter a clear **Collection title** (e.g. Summer Dresses, New Arrivals, Sale). In the **Description** field, add text that describes the collection. This appears on the collection page and can help with SEO.

## Upload a collection image

Click **Add image** in the Collection image section. Upload an image that represents this collection — this is shown on the Collection List section and collection card.

## Choose a collection type

In the **Collection type** section, choose:

* **Manual** — you add products to this collection yourself.
* **Automated** — products are added automatically based on rules you define (e.g. products tagged 'sale', products from a specific vendor).

## Add products (Manual collection)

If you chose Manual, scroll to the **Products** section and click **Browse** to search for and add products to the collection. You can also change the order products appear in by dragging them.

## Set up rules (Automated collection)

If you chose Automated, define the conditions:

* Choose whether products must match **All conditions** or **Any condition**.
* Add rules — e.g. Product tag is equal to 'summer', Product price is less than 100.

Products matching the rules are added automatically.

## Set the sort order

In the **Sort** dropdown, choose how products are ordered within the collection: Best selling, Newest, Price: low to high, Alphabetically, or Manual.

## Add SEO details

Click **Edit website SEO** at the bottom to set:

* **Page title**
* **Meta description**
* **URL handle**

## Save the collection

Click **Save**. The collection is now created and ready to be used in your theme — in the Featured Collection section, Collection List, or any other collection-based section.

## Assigning a Collection to a Section

How to use a collection in the theme editor

1. In the theme editor, add a collection-based section (e.g. Featured Collection, Product Slider).
2. Click on the section to open its settings.
3. Find the **Collection** setting and click **Select collection**.
4. Search for and select your collection.
5. Click **Save**.
